Basketball Wallaceburg does not promote active or passive recruitment by high schools or high school personnel.  Basketball Wallaceburg's house league program is a feeder program for Wallaceburg AirHawks teams and for all local high schools.  Wallaceburg AirHawks travel team players apparel is to represent Basketball Wallaceburg exclusively when at team activities.  To promote a sense of club unity and to dissuade coaches and players from having undue recruiting influence, Basketball Wallaceburg has initiated the following policy.

1.    House league coaches must wear their Basketball Wallaceburg apparel at club house league activities.  If the apparel is not available, house league volunteers must wear generic apparel that does not support or promote a specific high school.

2.    Travel team coaches must wear Basketball Wallaceburg apparel at all team activities.

3.    Travel team players must wear Basketball Wallaceburg apparel or non-descript apparel at all team activities.

4.    Exception:  Visiting guest coaches & players who provide clinics and on-court instruction on an infrequent basis.

5.    The house league convenor or head coach will ensure a supply of Basketball Wallaceburg t-shirts is available to outfit the volunteers

Any player can try out for any team; however, if there is an age appropriate team for that player, she must request approval to play up from the Board in writing.  The Board will review these requests on a case by case basis.

If an age appropriate team is not available, any player may play up if offered a roster spot by the coach.

It is the Board’s recommendation that coaches attempt to create age appropriate teams whenever possible.  It is the Board’s desire to have teams that are competitive at the travel basketball level.  The Board requires coaches to determine their teams in the best interest of Basketball Wallaceburg.

Novice, Atom, Major Atom

Basketball Wallaceburg meets or exceeds the minimum playing time requirements as dictated by Basketball Ontario. Basketball Ontario has very specific playing time requirements for Novice, Atom, and Major Atom and Basketball Wallaceburg adheres to the same policy at these levels. For Novice teams, Basketball Ontario requires “equal” playing time for the entire game, and for Atom and Major Atom it is required for the first 3 quarters, and half of the 4th quarter. Please note that “equal” means almost equal depending upon the number of players on a team. Failure to attend practices, behavioural or disciplinary issues, and/or a lack of effort may result in reduced playing time. The Basketball Ontario playing time requirements change from time to time.  Review the up-to-date rules at www.basketball.on.ca

Bantam, Major Bantam, Midget, Major Midget, Juvenile

For Bantam through Juvenile, Basketball Ontario provides no equal playing time regulations. According to Basketball Ontario a coach may choose to play as many or as few players for the entire game.  Some players may sit out.  Basketball Wallaceburg differs.  For these age categories, our policy is as follows;

For the first 10 games of the season, all athletes will be substituted in almost equally for three quarters of each game. Playing time in the fourth quarter is at the sole discretion of the coaching staff. This is notwithstanding any team-based rules a coach may have regarding missed practices or games.  Athletes who are repeatedly late or miss practices and games inhibit the coaches from developing their teams.  These athletes should expect to sit out until they have met the team’s attendance rules.

During championship games at sanctioned tournaments the entire second half is at the coach’s discretion.

During the Provincial Championships, the entire game is at the coach’s discretion.

Parent/Guardian/Guest Code of Conduct

 Basketball Wallaceburg Mission Statement:

 Mission Statement:

Basketball Wallaceburg’s goal is to encourage individuals to enjoy basketball by providing positive leadership in fundamental skills development and to improve basketball skills by fostering an environment of fair-play, well-being and success.

As a parent or guardian you and your guest will:

·         Understand the coach and team philosophy. If you don't know the goals of the team ask them to be explained at the first team meeting of the season.

·         Send your child ready to play and on time.

·         Support the team, but do not coach the players from the stands. Do not use commands such as "Pass it," "Shoot," or "Boot the ball." It confuses your child and others, and undermines the efforts of the coach.

·         Use positive encouragement. Demonstrate a positive role model for your child and encourage sportsmanship by showing respect and courtesy.   Through your actions and comments, make your child feel like a winner every time.

·         Refrain from any all-vulgar, lewd or obscene language or gestures while participating in, or watching any team or club event whether at home or away.

·         Refrain from speaking to officials.  If you have questions or concerns with the referees, relay the information to the team manager, who will take it to the coach.  Respect the officials and their authority during games and never question, discuss, or confront coaches during or immediately after the game. Allow yourself enough time to calm down.

·         Speak to the coach at a pre-determined “parents time” as determined by the coach and established at the beginning of the season, such as after practices, after team meetings, or on the phone at a mutually agreed upon time.

·         Direct all comments and criticisms to parents, participants, officials, or board members in private and away from the children participating in the program.  Coaches will not discuss players with anyone but their parent.  Also, coaches will always request a third party observer (manager, assistant coach, Board member) at any private discussion.

·         Report to the coach all injuries, special medical conditions (such as asthma) or extenuating circumstances (such as lack of sleep or family crisis) that may affect my child.

·         Instruct all guests as to the Parent, Guardian, Guest code of conduct and take full responsibility for the conduct of guests.

Parents, guardians and guests who fail to follow these rules may be asked to leave the gym for the balance of the game, practice or tournament. For significant or repeated violations the parent may be referred to the Board for discipline which may include a warning or suspension. In either case, the Coach will provide to the Board a clear written description of the offending conduct of the parent as soon as possible. Where problems continue to persist, the Board may revoke the child’s (player’s) membership in Basketball Wallaceburg at which point the child will no longer be eligible to participate in the Basketball Wallaceburg program.

Also, parents who have concerns about any aspect of their child’s experience may initiate a Board investigation by providing to any Board member a clear written description of the incident(s) as soon as possible.

As a parent of a Basketball Wallaceburg travel team player, I have read and fully understand all components of this Code of Conduct and agree to abide by this code.  I understand that failure to comply with this Code of Conduct may result in my child loosing the privilege of participating in the Basketball Wallaceburg program.

Coaches Code of Conduct

Basketball Wallaceburg Mission Statement:

Mission Statement:

Basketball Wallaceburg’s goal is to encourage individuals to enjoy basketball by providing positive leadership in fundamental skills development and to improve basketball skills by fostering an environment of fair-play, well-being and success.

The player/coach relationship is a privileged one. Coaches play a critical role in the personal as well as athletic development of their athletes. They must understand and respect the inherent power imbalance that exists in this relationship and must be extremely careful not to abuse it. Coaches must also recognize that they are conduits through which the values and goals of our Basketball organization are channeled. How an athlete regards his/her sport is often dependent on the behaviour of the coach.

All coaches must conduct themselves in a manner that is above reproach at all times. We are all placed in the category of a teacher or parent, and cannot be perceived as a peer to the children that we have in our care and custody. Coaches must be a mature role model for the players to identify with, and respect.

In order to protect the children in our care and Basketball Wallaceburg coaches from possible allegations of inappropriate behaviour, the following are recommendations to eliminate occasions where children and coaches may be vulnerable:

As a Basketball Wallaceburg Coach, I will:

    • refrain from inappropriate physical contact with players or verbal or physical behaviours towards players that constitute harassment or abuse.
    • refrain from inappropriate discussions with any player (i.e. about other players, parents, coaches, or intimate, personal, private or sexual matters), whether in person, by telephone, mail, or any electronic means.
    • refrain from the use of profane, insulting, harassing or otherwise offensive language in the conduct of my duties.
    • avoid transporting players in my personal vehicles.
    • always conduct  discussions with players in the presence of another adult and avoid being left alone with only one or two players.
    • refrain from having players stay in my hotel/motel room.
    • exercise a high degree of personal modesty when changing clothing at practices or games. I will not change in the presence of children.
    • ensure privacy for my players when they change uniforms or practice gear before and after practices and games.
    • conduct practices and games in a manner that encourages optimum success.

As a Coach of a Basketball Wallaceburg travel team player, I have read and fully understand all components of this Code of Conduct and agree to abide by this code. I understand that failure to comply with this Code of Conduct may result in my suspension or dismissal from the Basketball Wallaceburg program.
